Reccomend a primer please.

I will soon be in my last stages of building and profiling a round for my 25-06. I am using 115gr Berger VLD hunting bullets, 54gr of H4831 powder and Remington 9 1/2 primers and achieving an average 3028 fps velocity. I am seeing velocity diffrences of between 15 and 30 fps and would like to bring that down could yal sugest a primer that may bring down my velocity diffrences? Thank's, Brad

All I could suggest is buy a pack of a couple different primers like federal 210's or 210m's, CCI 200's or BR-2's, Winchester large rifle, and maybe even some wolf primers if you can find them. Load up some with each different primer and see what happens accuracy wise and velocity wise. Other than that I don't think there is anyone on here that can say one way or another that one primer over another will do what you want. Every gun is going to like something different. Try a standard LR primer CCI 200 or Federal 210. Switching to a standard LR primer may give you exactly what you're looking for. However, you may need to increase your powder charge a little bit to get back into your accuracy node. It has worked for me to get my ES down.

Truthfully though, if the primer switch doesn't improve the spread, 15-30 fps ES isn't all that bad, and the results may improve just by shooting on a different day. Also, even at the high end of your velocity swing at 30 fps it still only costs you 5" or so at 1000 yards. Only you can determine whether you can live with 1/2 MOA drop with an at worst 30 fps velocity swing with your 25/06.

I'd tend to bet a lot of guys that have claimed single digit ES are really in the 15-30 fps ES area after monitoring ES over a large sample of shots. Unless you know exactly how to adjust your load for differing atmospheric conditions you'll see velocity swings and differing ES. Speaking in general terms, many single ES claims are made with a relatively small sample of shots over a chronograph.

15-30fps isn't horrible. How do you know it is primer related? It could be neck tension, or brass capacity differences, or maybe the brass hasn't all been shot the same number of times. Or maybe you're letting some of the ammo 'cook' in a warm chamber?

Under the suggestion of a local reloading dealer I am getting the Federal Premium match grade primers. He had heard good things from some of the long range shooters that go thru him and it's something that he regularly carries. Thats important to me so I can get my hands on the same components all the time. Brad

I would try some Hodgdon Hyb 100V of about 52.0 grains to start and get the bullet right over 3100 without stressing the case

Hybrid 100v is a good suggestion, as is weight sorting the cases, verifying neck tension, making sure your primer seating depth is equal, trim length of cases, etc.... but yes us "bench guys" use Fed210M or CCI BR2s or CCI #34s, wolfe primers suck in cold weather, 215 and 250 and WLRM are to errattic. Your charge weight seems a little low I figured 55-55.5grns.

I agree with Backwoods. Try a match primer and if you haven't hit any pressure signs try upping your charge .3 gr. at a time and see if your velocity spreads begin to shrink. I have loaded 115's in 3 different rifles and all of them shot best nearing a max load. Two preferred 4350 and the third liked 4831. I used fed 210m in all of them. Hope that helps.

I'm a 270 win man and in my experience Winchester 25-06, 270, 30-06 cases hold 2-3 more grains of powder than RP. The Hybrid 100v is different. It doesn't act like where it is on the burn chart. So it has some different properties.

yes, 52 was a starting point. The poster needs more speed like 3100+ and then plug it all into the ballistic charts.

I'm aware of how hybrid is I use it in 270win and 300wsm, when I sain 54grns seems a little light I mean I think with a 210M or BR2 55-55.5grns of H4831 would be closer not 55.5grns of hybrid.
