Let's Talk Weatherby

I'm looking at a few options for rifles. I "probably" will be sticking to only Deer and Antelope, but someday, if all my stars align (LOL) I'd love to go Elk hunting... it's my dream. Ok, so.....

I'm probably going to only buy one rifle and sadly, I like to buy GOOD, vs. semi-good.... so. Being a Lefty, my options seem like Weatherby, Sako (if I stumble upon one), maybe a new Browning XBOLT if they are any good?.... Remington possibly.

For this post though, how are factory made Weatherby rifles thought of for longer range shooting? I could be talked into an UltraLight 257 perhaps. I'm wondering if the Weatherby rounded shoulder is a problem for reloading? Are the guns "All That" as they say? Are they better than for instance, a Ruger Hawkeye? A Sako?

I like em. I have owned many.... probably 50 or more. I built my .338 LM off a Wby action. The only two duds I have owned were both ULW's in 270. The ulw was not intended for and are not long range rigs. They are light easy to shoulder 1 1/2 moa rifles. If you want to shoot a factory rifle to 1000 yards get an accumark.

I was doing the same research not long ago and bought a Weatherby Vanguard used, in 7mm Rem Mag specifically for whitetails(for now). I'm like you, I'd love to go elk hunting if the stars aligned, it was a leap year, I held my face just right...lol....etc...But for now, all I can see is whitetails, coyotes, and LOTS of range time.

When I got my rifle it was pretty clean as it should have been. Looks brand new. But it has one of those *^#*% plastic stocks on it. I only had the cash at the time for one box of ammo to run through it to see what I'd bought. I bought a box of Hornady 139 Interbonds ( if memory serves). Anyway.....my new rifle didn't shoot as well as I'd hoped. BUT!!! After bedding it twice (d@mn plastic again) I finally got the bedding compound (J-B Weld) to stick well on my third attempt. Took it back out to the range and it shot as good as any factory rifle that I've shot to date and better than many.

Would I recommend a Weatherby to you? Yes I would!

Would I recommend a plastic-stocked model? Only if you've already bought a replacement stock.


EDITED TO ADD-----one last thing.....strongly consider cartridge choice if you'd like lots of brass choices. I think there are other companies now making Weatherby brass, but I'm not sure on availability since mine isn't chambered for a Weatherby caliber. If your going to reload for your new rifle, you almost HAVE TO look into brass before deciding on a caliber unless your wallet has no bottom.

They are fine rifles, as are the sakos. but for the same price as accumark you could get the savage model 10 predator hunter lh in 260 with a good scope. If you decide you really need more just a small gunsmith bill away from 6.5./284 or something similar(still less money than the weatherby with the same scope) plenty good as is and factory ammo, and or brass for reloading is way cheaper. I met a guide, that swears by 260 for everything. I am a long time .257 fan and I am building a 6.5 for next hunting season, heck I might just buy the savage and save the time of waiting for the gunsmith and shoot more...just my .02

I have had about as many as Broz. They are at the top. The accumark is a serious 1000 yard rifle. I posted on here about my two 257 wby's that are our go to rifles for deer/antelope to 700 or so yards. Just incredibly flat and accurate with the 100-110 grain bullets. My standard mk 5 257 wby shoots under 1 1/2" at 400 yards and my son shot a three shot 2 1/2" group at 620 yards..

there is a very nice lefty mark v at the grice gun shop in clearfield pa. in
7mm weatherby. since im a lefty also i was drooling over it the other day.
price was as i recall $850. a nice used lefty rem 700 bdl in a popular magnum caliber was $575.
i bought a used savage model 16 stainless in 300wsm for $600. it had a cheap scope on it.
i wanted it for the action so i can hopefully correct the feed problems on a 6.5x300wsm i built last year on an old 243.

Love both of mine. 257 Accumark launching 115g Bergers, and a 300 launching 210 Bergers.

You already know my opinion.

I have the .257 Wby Mag in the Accumark V. It's just stupid accurate. It has the muzzle brake.

Since we're talking Wby I have a question for to the other Wby. owners-do you have the brake, and if so do you like it? I think it helps the accuracy, but it obviously makes the gun a little longer and heavier.
