338 edge barrel

If you where to build a 338 edge from scratch what barrel would you choose and what twist would it be.

I'm thinking a 30in finished Krieger Barrel with 6 flutes. I want somthing close to a sendero counter. I'm planning on shooting 300 SMK and possibly the 285 Hornady match bullets. I'm unsure on what twist barrel I need.

From what I have read 1 in 10 is the right twist but will let the 338 shooters give you better info. My next custom will be in the 338 size just can't figure out which one.

I have a 26" Krieger #6 (slightly larger than sendero on my 338 Lapua with a 9.35 twist. they say 10 is minimum for the 300 SMK so I wanted a little buffer, plus I have no intention of shooting anything under 300 but a 250 would be the lightest for sure. I have the 10 flutes which I really like.. Depending on how much you plan to carry the rifle 30" may be a little excessive i would go 26-28" Remember If you are planning on adding a brake your going to have another 1.5-2 inches hanging off the end out there.

I had great success with a Lawton 8 land 9.4 twist..20 inch They dont make barrels any more which is a shame as they just shoot!
Mine was a Sendero profile with extra knox so we can rechamber if required without going to a new barrel.

300 smk and 300gn Bergers around Under 1" to 1/2" at 300 yards If I did my part.

IMO a Sendero fluted profile would be fine without the extra weight..

hey folks i'm new here and i am interested in the .338 edge i would like to build a .338 but the action i have for the job is a factory .300 rum . it shoots good for a factory pencil tube but everyone tells me that the 338 lapua is too much for the bolt lugs, and i will be gaining excess headspace pretty quick.how does the edge compare to the lapua and could i safely use my rum action for the job. any advice will be apriciated!

No issue using the RUM 700 as a donor for a .338 Edge or 338RUM ... Just add money for a full blueprint of the action. true, lap lugs re thread and the list goes on.
It also depend if you want to mag feed it ... extended mag box MBE3 Wyatts. retime bolt, etc. You dont want to have to seat the 300gn pills too deep.

Depends what your budget is and if the 300RUM barrel is cactus?

New tactical stock and the list never ends! Trigger..(once you have a Jewell its hard going back)

Sometimes you may be better off getting say a Stiller TAC predator type action. Then if going this way the Lapua is a worthy option.

Re Lapua, I'm not agunsmith but mine wont build a Lapua on R 700 action. Its a lot fatter so the bolt face doesnt really match. The factory Remmies in 338 Lapua are also a bit hit and miss and pretty thin in places.

I forgot to add you will need custom dies for an Edge which is no biggie really .
Go to the Defensive Edge web site there is a lot of info on the 338 Edge there by Shawn Carlock. I got my dies and other bits from him.

If you are shooting a lot, you may want to consider the price of brass for a Lapua but its really good and lasts a while. Remmy brass is fine if prepped properly

If you want to use your existng action find a local recommended smith with an Edge reamer and wait for him to build you one. Its just not as simple as screwing a new barrel on if its accuracy and LR shooting you want to do.

Once your bitten by the bug the quest for accuracy never really ends! The distances get bigger as well.

My next one build is a custom 7mm Dakota on a Lawton action..ABS barrel
Mind you I still have a 700P in 7mm as the wait for a custom rifle can be a darn long time!

Honestly you are lucky in the US,,, Just buy one of the rifles on this site from Len it will save you waiting and take a bit of the headache out of it.. I wish I could without Tax and import duties and loads of paperwork! In the end you wont be far off the mark cost wise.

Thanks for the replies. What would be the most functional weight for a long range target/hunting rifle. According to Krieger a 30 in sendero 6 flutes will run about 5.25 pounds. Is this to light for a 338 edge?

I have never heard of this before. I have a 338 Lapua on a 700 action and have had no issues. the only down fall is the amount of material you need to remove to make it a repeater if you choose to go that rout and the metal that has to be removed so that loaded rounds can be ejected, but strength is not an issue I feel my lapua is on par with any lapua built on a custom action. with the upgrades I have added and the work that was done to it.

I know more smiths who will refuse to build a 338 Lapua on a Rem 700 that will due to lug set back and lug shear. One smith had pic's on his wall of two failed Rem 700's that had the lugs shear with a 338 Lapua. I'm surprised you haven't read this, the 338 Lapua size case seems to be universally regarded as on the limit of the Rem700 and similar actions.

I have an over sized custom bolt built by PT&G, I have heard of people saying the action isnt the best fit but I have never heard of one failing.

I would think if the 700 was unsuitable for the 338 Lapua then Remington would not have built one at the factory like they did. My smith bought one just to look at when building my rifle and the only real difference is the modification for the detachable mag which leads to short coal if you want to use the magazine...

Agree the the 700 is a great action. I have several just I would never consider a 338 Lapua on one.. Edge, 338 RUM yes no issue..Basically you arent removing a lot or any steel away to accomodate a bigger bolt. Thats the beauty of a 700 its not forged!
High intensity powerful cartridges need to have their pressure held back somehow,

The more I learn in this game is that the barrel shank and the knox form on the barrel are critical for saftey and possibly better match winning accuracy. Accuracy is important if building one of these big girls. Lawton 7500 V 7000 for example, with the top F class shooters opting for the slightly bigger 7500 single shot.

Is there any gunsmith in the site who can give us the technical side on the ins and outs of this argument?. Strengths and weak areas if any?.

If the Lapua works no argument from me but is this the best option? Why do they make Lawton 8500's stiller TAC338's etc with a bigger barrel shank?

I'm not saying it wont work but is it the best option?

I would say its not the best option. I paid more having my action blueprinted and modified and getting a custom bolt made than if I had just bought a Lawton 7500 which would bow be my first choice. I just don't consider it to be unsafe in anyway if done correctly with a 700
