for open country you're probably OK. in the woods, that 6x will be too much once in a while.

i am in the same spot you are and i will be hunting everything from deer to moose and elk. Now i have had shooting opportunities all the way out too 600-700 yards but i have always had a moose come up infront at 35 yards. the 6x i figured is too much and i think im giong with the 4-16 FFP model

Im also wondering about FFP. What made you decide on the FFP for hunting? Will you have yardage turrets or no?

I figured in case I don't have a lot of time to set up, get ready, dial, and then shoot, I still have the reticle no matter what power the scope is on. I figured it was a smart thing to have just incase. Of course if I have time then dialin instead of holdover is what I will be doing. The FFP just gives me options

4-16 is a better choice all around hunting scope over the 6-24 if your talkin about hunting deer and elk in the mountains. As for FFP it is useful as matt‑3479 states if the animal is out of your PBR and moving and you have no time to dial the scope.
The Viper PST 4-16 FFP would be a good choice and not break the bank. I'm about to order one.

So should I just get the Vortex HS scope, then get the target turret ? Only difference is the reticle and illumination right? also it's cheaper.
I just purchased the Viper 6.5-20x50mm while I wait for the Viper HS 4-16x44mm.
I am going to do a review in the next day on my current Viper but for now I will say the glass is crystal clear at all ranges.
I also hunt and had\have concern for those close 25 yard shots. At 25 yards the target is still crystal clear 6.5. The concern we all have is if the target is moving failry fast, will we be able to find and follow it quick enough in a peripheral field of vision at 25 yards with 6.5 power. Or even if the target is not moving at that time, will we be able to find it quick enough for a shot.
I have only practiced a sight-in at a range and in the store with an unobstructed view - personally I do not think in that situation there is any problem.
But ...... if there are trees and shrub closer that might partially obstruct the immediate view of that 25 yards shot, especially if object is moving, it could get tricky.
