Would you use on Bear a .35 Marlin or a .45/70? what would you use?
The 45/70 just about knocked out fillings in my teeth.

I have the Guide Gun in 45-70 and it is a thumper for sure! Using 40k level loads and proper bullets it's totally capable of big bears. Mine is accurate as well, shooting under an inch even with me pulling the trigger!

I would use the 444 Marlin for bear, and the 45/70 would be my second choice
when using the lever action marlin.

Both have some recoil but are manageable.

The 45-70 with the right ammunition is big enough to take whatever you wish to shoot in North America given it is short range. I have a couple and with the more powerful handloads it is quite the kicker!!!!!

Hey man----don't worry about the fillings!! Think of the poor bear!!

+1 on the 45-70.

Cheers,
Jim

I'm not very active here, but I spend a lot of time on the range. One of my favorites rifles is my Marlin 1895 in .45-70. I reload for it and love to shoot it. It is very accurate and seems to have ample power with the proper ammunition for your needs, so I vote for the .45-70!

On black Bear none better than the 200gr SP from the 35 Rem. The 45/70 with 350gr Hornady RN or 350gr Speer FN is what I use on grizzly Bears. And the 350gr takes a little recoil out of the 45/70 even near 2000 fps.

It is a zombie thread lol. But I find the info alaska posted pretty helpful since my 45-70 load for hunting caribou and bear protection was the 350 gr Hornady roundnose.

I killed 3 bear with the .45-70 and it really knocks the snot out of them. I only ever had one run after the shot and it only went 30 yards. I used my own handloads with 300 gr Hornady HPs.
The 35 Rem is no slouch though and it will definitely handle the average size blackie but I'll take the .45-70 hands down. If you're planning on picking one for the bigger, nastier bears then it would have to be the 45-70 with a 405 gr hard cast bullet. That bigger diameter and heavier bullet will draw more attention to Mr. Bruin.
I mean this kiddingly but suck up the recoil Buttercup and use the big boy!
