30-06 improved ??

I have a chassis 30-06 i chambered for LR military competitions. Now I want to supersize it :) What variants do you know of that give the basic 30-06 a real boost AND I can still use saami cases to ff. Thanks.

Some years ago I built a 30-06 AI using Model 70 CRF action with a 24" Douglas barrel. I used this rifle as a back-up elk rifle and a loaner. Velocity improvement averaged 150 fps, and accuracy was excellent. If I were to do it over, I would go with the Sherman. I've talked to those people several times and they were very helpful, and answered all my questions. It's nice to know that you have that kind of support when dealing with wildcat cartridges. The 30-06 Sherman will will certainly give you some performance improvement over the standard 30-06.

I have a Rem 700 custom in 30-06 Ackley with a 27" Shilen barrel. Run 190 Bergers at 2826 and 180 Game Kings at 2900. I shoot factory 30-06 at times, works fine. I went with the Ackley so if Murphy strikes while I'm on a hunt away from home most any hardware store has basic 30-06 ammo. Reamer was from Pacific Tool and Die and I picked up some Redding dies from Brownells if I remember correctly. I've harvested cow elk, deer and antelope with it. Works great although if you're looking for max performance it's still not a 300wm.

LOL! That's why I always bring a back-up rifle with ammo even though I only hunt an hour away. 😇

Mram10us:: I have experience with the gibbs. first you may need to go to a 280 remington case the neck it up to 338 or 358, then size it in your dies. I thing the gibbs case is unique that it has a 35%sholder and it needs a 1mm longer case to form properly. It may not, but you cannot shoot 30/06 rounds in the thing.. but I am sure you will get 30 wsm velocities. I have a 35 gibbs and I had to go to 280 brass because 35 whelen brass was streching 3/4" from the base. and after 3 rounds it came apart thus the 280 remington brass solved the problem.. Now having said that you will be happy with the round. I am mine so happy I have also a 375.Brown Whelen and I get almost 375 H &H velocites..

A lot of prints aren't available, there is a book that has what remains of Rocky Gibbs work, much of it went up in a fire so a lot of the knowledge is past from one smith to another over the years.
I have a 30 Gibbs built by Rocky Gibbs in 1958 I believe he had moved to Idaho by then. I also have the book that you mentioned. I believe that he had his wife promise to burn his research papers when he passed from cancer. The letter that I have from the fellow that had the gun built is very interesting to read. Gibbs wildcatted the 06 I think from .25 thru 338 with the 270 and 30 calibers being his favorite. I fire formed 06 brass until I had Quality Brass build some. Very accurate and will get velocities over 3000' with 155 gr. Berger's.

Here is a little more data to evaluate the 3-06 versus the 30 Gibbs for water capacity etc. when seeing what it make bring to the table for performance.

Ballistic studies research has their Manson -Foster designed reamer. Seems to be 150 -200 fps increase from what he says. Some other benefits along with firing factory ammo

Seems like H1000 is the powder to use in 300 WM for 208-215 gr boowits.

My point was about the velocity of 215s in the 300WM. I've used pretty much every powder out there with this combo - H1000, Retumbo, H4831, N565, N570, RL22, RL25, RL26, RL33, and the typical velocity at max pressure in my 26" barrels is in the 2950 fps range.

That is why I stated that expecting a 215 @ 2900 fps out of a 30-06 parent case is probably not realistic. It doesn't matter how you improve the '06, the Win Mag is still going to have a 15-20 grain edge in case capacity.

One member posted 2850 fps with a standard 30-06 and 28" barrel. So though it might not be possible it's not out of the realm of possibilities with a 26" 30-06 AI.

The 30 sherman does. In the 300 Sherman Short (less capacity than the 30 Sherman) in a 28" barrel, 2830 fps with a 225 grain, 208 grain at 2950, 200 grain at 3030, all using RL26. Add capacity by a couple grains and offset that with a little shorter barrel, and that is about where your at. However, that is based off of a SAUM parent case and using tough ADG brass, not a 30-06 case....and the 30 Sherman is based off the .270 WIN case and about the best brass available is RWS if you can find it, and norma brass as a second.

I have zero experience with the Sherman cartridges. If they are getting those speeds with '06 case capacity, I stand corrected. That is crazy fast out of an '06.

Be safe everyone.
