#1) Interarms, Mini-Mark-X .223 Cost me about $300 20 years ago. I've had a couple of scopes on it, a Nikon 3-9x40 & (currently) a Leupold 4-12x40. It has shot .5" OR LESS with most factory loads I've fed it & punched ragged holes with 3 different factory loads. I could never justify looking for a better hand-load for this rifle. #2) Savage .243 beater I picked up, rusty & in pieces, that was meant for a "barn gun" for my dad's farm. Cleaned it up, put it together, put an old scope on it to check out how it shot & took it to the range. Initially couldn't hit the target as damage to muzzle had magnetic bore-sighter mis-aligned to bore. Eventually got it on target but following shots all missed — until I realized they were going through the same hole! By 5 shots the hole had opened up to about .4" total diameter, less than .2" center-to center for a 5-shot group! Total cost, about $150 plus my time. My most expensive was a Remington 700 BDL Varmint in .22-250 with a Leupold 6.5-20x scope that I eventually got to shot .75"-.5" with the right loads. New I could only get groups in the 1.5-1.75" range, so it took some work. I was never satisfied with that gun because I expected it to shoot well out of the box. I sold it to someone after I got it shooting. He was very happy with it.
