I have owned several 338s over the years. 338 win, 340 wby, 338-378. The 340, and the 338-378 were both built on Ruger #1s. The Op stated he was hoping to build on a 700 action, and if that`s the case that would probably eliminate the LM, and the NM because of the bolt face. I have recently renewed my 338 love affair with a 338 Edge +P built on a donor Rem 700 in 300 RUM. I had Shawn True the action, and cut it for a 4" mag box, then screw on a 30" Hart 9 twist. This rifle has been easy to tune, and have taken it out to a mile with no problems. As far as the Op going with a factory 338 offering for ammo availability....... Well that`s a moot point in todays reality, as ANY factory ammo is like unicorn spit. Shawn called me a few days ago to let me know his Redding 338 Edge die shipment arrived if your looking for dies. Whidden also has them (I use Whidden) I have taken my load development to 3000 fps easily with a 300 Berger OTM, but have a very accurate load at 2960 so that`s where she stays. That being said I also love a good 30 cal too. My 300 PRC is a hoot to shoot at a mile as well. Hoping to get some steel set up out to 2k this summer too. Gotta love a 33! my .02
