As others have said, if your ok with hand loading and fireforming, the Sherman cartridges are fantastic, and he could use his brass he already has. The performance break down of them is roughly as follows: 6.5 sherman sends 140's around 3300 270 sherman sends 170's around 3100 280 sherman sends 180's around 3050 300 sherman sends 215's around 2950 338 sherman send 250's around 2800. They are pretty potent cartridges considering they are just improved .270 brass necked up or down to whatever flavor you choose. But, if wildcat cartridges aren't your thing, and you want to do long range, I would consider simply rebarreling to a 1 in 8 twist standard .270 win, and shoot the 170 eol's or you can use some of the long range monolothic bullets as well. As an added benefit you would already be set up with brass, bullets, dies, etc. A standard .270 with 24-26" should send a 170 around 2700-2800 with reloder 26, and probably a couple other powders as well. That would be a respectable long range set up. If you don't reload at all, about the best long range cartridge with decent long range factory ammo available would be a .280 ai, or possibly a 6.5 PRC. Unless you wouldn't mind having your smith open the bolt face up to a magnum diameter and slightly modify the feed rails, then that opens up another string of possible cartridges. Hopefully I didnt just open up a rabbit hole.....
