Only been a member for a short period, but have been hunting for over 50yrs. Guess I'm gonna throw in my two cents. The original question was referring to a deer rifle out to 1200yrds. 7mm mag an 300 mag will kill a deer that far. One very important point is shot placement! If you are not sure, don't take the shot!! If your guild is worth his salt, he won't let you take the shot! On any hunt anybody needs to go prepared, an your guild should make sure of that to ensure a successful hunt. Nuf said about that. Now as far as 7mm vs 300 I (an this is just me) favor a 7mm! Just because I favor it doesnt meek a 300 is not a good round! It is!!! But all of this bunk about the 7mm not being a good elk round is just not true! Short or longrange! Now I will agree that if(an I meen if) the select few that can see much less hit out past 1200yrds, then the 338 is the way to go! This is why all of us do what we do!(reload, build rifles, shoot, hunt) now getting back to the point any premium bullet anyone can get for a 300 you can get for a 7mm. For what's its worth, all of my 7mm are model 700 Remington's,(again to each his own) one load is 168berger,3025fps,24in barrel, another is 180 Berger 3000fps,26in barrel, I even have a custom7/300win mag,180 Berger 3350fps!!!!! Not sayin I'm better, just equal! Thanks to all for sharing your info! Just my input! DT
