It is in my DNA from my Father's side, If we can't make it we will break down and buy it. So I made my own recoil shield for prone shooting my 45-70 1874 Sharps rifle over cross sticks from the prone. With that steel butt plate and shooting 520 gr slugs with a compressed case full of black powder can give you a pretty good thump especially when you do it 20 to 40 times in a short time. I used closed cell sleeping mat foam, cut from the blue mat you get a WalMart. I had some ballistic fabric and just used it to make a pocket shaped like the shoulder of a coat to put the foam in and used some belts off an old fanny pack with the buckle to strap it on me. Light and works great. I also made me a check rest for this rifle using this foam under a piece of split elk hide laced onto the stock so I could get a cheek weld. If I did not have this on the rifle when you raised the Vernier back sight it will raise your cheek off the stock and then recoil will SMACK you and about break your jaw.
