[QUOTE="JMHNL, post: 1520620, member: 89971"] A little bit of an update here. I ended up buying another #1 in 300 win mag. I hunted with the 25-06 a few times, and it was sufficient (for axis deer), but what can I say, I like magnums and what a great excuse to get another one! I tracked down a SS model and I'm happy with that. I also installed Hicks Accurizer and Jard trigger into this rifle. The accurizer was a fairly easy install with a dremel and a few hand tools, took about an hour. If your #1 does the shot stringing thing, try the accurizer. It solved the issue completely for me. The 300 was horizontally stringing shots, so I adjusted the accurizer up about 1/64" and the groups tighten right up. With Hornady factory ammo, I'm shooting 3/4" 5 shot groups at 100yds, which is perfectly acceptable for my needs. I bet reloading would tighten that up even more....maybe one day! The trigger also helped a lot, both my #1's had ****** factory triggers. One thing I will say though is that the install was not easy, I had to have a more experienced gun-smithing friend come by and rescue me. But it transformed the gun from a hard and weird feeling trigger to a tuned/crisp 2.5lb trigger. Next task is to grind down the safety button a bit so it stops catching the ejected brass, an irritating problem that I'm surprised exists....anyone done this on a SS model? So, the 25-06 is in the safe for now, maybe my son will use it one day. The 300 is my go-to hunting rifle at the moment, nothing like hunting with a single shot. Hope this info is helpful to someone.
