I see it as making the best use of the case's powder charge. you can use anything from a 20" to a 26" with all powders used. I like the 26" barrel with a tight twist due to the powder that both of mine seem to like. Both of mine wear a 24" barrel at the current time. the long range one should wear a 26" to make the powder burn more complete. if you want as compact a rifle as possible, the WSM does well with a 20" barrel but the speed is compromised a bit and the bark of the unburnt powder is bigger. if you are slinging 130 or 140 grain slug then, yes the 20" barrel will serve you better than the longer barrels. the trade off is the 24"; most of the powders are at 80% full burn in a 24" barrel. I see you are in Texas and have lots of flat land like eastern Montana. I have a little experience up in Montana. umm, the 22" to 24" is a good medium barrel length to use. the 1:9" twist is good with longer ranges and 150 grain slugs. not knocking the 20" to 22" barrels. You still can use a 20" to 22" with a 1:9" twist and 150 grain slugs. depending on range shot I believe I would use a 20" or 22" out to 300 yards, 22" to 24" out to 450 yards, beyond that I would start thinking 26" barrel for the 270 WSM.

I helped built a 20" barreled 1:8" twist 270 WSM last year for a hunter in Pensilvania. he loved it. Unless you think that a larger magnification is required for your range you intend to shoot, then VX-5 HD 3-15X50MM. I hope I have not offended you in any way here.

[QUOTE="freddiej, post: 1872820, member: 26227"] Darryle, I do not see the 26" barrel as defeating the purpose of the Mod-7 action choice. I see it as making the best use of the case's powder charge. you can use anything from a 20" to a 26" with all powders used. I like the 26" barrel with a tight twist due to the powder that both of mine seem to like.
