You can go mild to wild on just about any of the DIY builds. I've done Savage action build's from under $1k excluding optics like my 6.5-06 build. I used the action off my 110 FLP 300 WM,changed the bolt head, magazine box & follower, had McGowen make the barrel with a Shilen 5.5 contour, and ordered an unfinished stock from Boyds. A 223 build using the same style Boyds stock Then I have four that I've set up using Choate Tactical stock's in 25-06, 6.5 CM, 7mm-08, and 308 Using the custom action's with a Rem. 700 footprint, the stock options are limitless. You also get better options for trigger's. Shilen DGR action,Trigger Tech Diamond trigger,Shilen select match 6.5 CM barrel,KRG Whiskey 3 chassis. ARC Nucleus action with Barloc system, Trigger Tech Diamond trigger, X-Caliber 22 CM barrel, KRG Bravo chassis with a LH Whiskey 3 backbone. All of these rifles shoot very good. Believe it or not,my Savage 6.5 CM build with an E.R.Shaw barrel has shot the smallest 5 shot group of any of the other brand of barrels that I've ever used on any rifle. It has shot a .122" group. I've used almost every brand of barrel over the years, and it's hard to say that one brand is really that much better than another. Some shoot longer between cleaning, some clean up easier than other's,but I've never had one that didn't shoot great with tuned loads.
