I have done a lot of expansion testing on Badlands bullets. The best system so far that I have found is clear 10% ballistic gel at 45 feet from the muzzle using an Oehler chronometer to measure the MV. I use very slow burning powder to get MVs at or below 1700 fps with the rifles we would normally use for long range testing. Twist rates of the barrels vary but range from 1:9-1:7. The 10% 16” long gel is backed by a 20% gel to capture the bullet. At the rear of the 20% gel is placed a 1/2” thick plywood backed by a 1/4” steel plate and the gels on the sides are covered with steel plates to prevent bullet escape. Intact bullet recovery is high, and we can see not only the configuration of the wound channel but also the point at which the tip is released from the bullet and the instant expansion happens. We used this system to test various hollow point designs in order to effect prompt expansion at low impact velocities, 1700 fps and below. Also, we test other manufacturers’ bullets and we now understand well what favors or hinders reliable expansion. The total length of gel is usually 32-40”, so not only can we see the wound channel length but also the path of the bullet beyond the expansive part of the wound channel. Penetration is almost always 30-40” total with the expansive part of the wound channel 10” or more. It explains why we rarely recover the bullets from the game we shoot.
