Just purchased a Zeiss hd5 3-15 x 42 with z-plex reticle. I have it mounted on a RAR Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor, primarily to be used for hunting. This scope has side parallex adjustment which I thought would be handy for distance shooting. No yardage markings on the dial (which makes sense) but I plan to make my own. First thing I did after mounting the scope was set my rear focus for a sharp reticle. Backed adjustment out til reticle was blurry & made 1/4 turns in glancing at the reticle (in the sky) after focusing on an object approx 100 yards way. At least that's the way I was taught & at max magnification (15x). I will do quite a bit of woods hunting & most shots are under 100 yards. I also occasionally hunt pipelines & right of ways hence the higher magnification scope...2 birds, one stone. So I initially set up a target at 75 yards just to play with the parallex & scope in general. What I found is that with the parallex properly dialed out, my sight picture is blurry. I have to turn the ocular in a half turn to get a clear sight picture. This is a No-go in my circle...am I missing something or am I correct in thinking one shouldn't adjust the ocular once it's set ? The scope is supposedly parallex free at 300 yards from the factory. I'm assuming that's with the parallex set at infinity ???? Again, no yardage markings. When I'm hunting in the woods I would like to set it & forget it as far as parallex is concerned, but it is my understanding that the biggest errors can be at close range. I won't turn magnification over 9x & the gun will stay on 3 or 4 most of the time. I would love to hear from some of the experienced hunters on here as to a practical approach to hunting with a side parallex scope...this is my first.
