am all about 6.5 X 55 Swede. My 100 year old Swedish Mauser shoots 1 moa with my hand loads and the barrel might be the original. That is quite the norm for these old Mausers. On paper the cartyridge is a ho-hum performer. On paper that is. In truth, it is known to function far beyond what could be expected. It is known as the European 30-06 due to its popularity. It is the "standard 300 meter competition calibre" and given that they invented the 7.62 X ???, aka 30 calibre or 308 NATO, that speaks tons. I have personally shot a gallon jug at 450 yards with a Swede I had never fired prior and did that off of a rolled blanket set on the hood of a pickup. The owner's perfectly hand crafted loads did mos of the work. Did I mention it was open sights? The owner repeated my performance immediately after at 550 yards. The bullets didn't have enough energy to explode the water filled gallon jugs. I also have 4 guns in 7.62 calibre. Just for the fun of it and to consider for a "Doomsday" gun, look into the Mosin Nagant. Rifle bullets that have 30-06 performance selling for $.17 each and a reasonably accurate rifle for $90....MN 91/30 model. But that is off topic. The best long range rifle out there today seems to be the 6.5 X 284. Savage makes one. !000 yard target rifle. Good hunting and shopping, I was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area. edwin
