You can EASILY and ethically get to 500 yards with budget setups. Heck many budget setups will get you ethically to the 700 yard range as well. For example, it is a fact you can get a used savage, and throw on a higher end prefit barrel and have a .5-.75MOA gun. You can get a used savage action for about 250-350$ Throw on a nice pre-fit barrel anywhere from 300-500$ and then buy yourself either a B&C stock or a boyds stock and have it bedded. You will be at the 1000$ mark and have a semi-custom rifle which I guarantee will shoot .5-.75MOA(or better) 5 shot groups at 700 yards with minimal load workup (let alone with decent factory ammo). I have 2 savages doing this well and many other have them as well. Then throw on a Vortex scope and you have a budget but still very functional and ethical setup for deer out to 700. Just my two cents.
I am by no means a long range hunter but I have been on this sight for a long time and have to kindly disagree. First question is no one has asked the OP what their idea of long range is. The OP may simply just want to hunt out to 500 yards (Here in NY that is long range).
