On sunday January 26th my 9 year old son Adrian was fortunate enough to harvest his first big game animal. A Roosevelt elk. Oregon has a youth mentoring program so anyone over 21can mentor a youth from 9-13. It is a great progam and my buddy wanted to mentor my son on his late season cow hunt. Adrian has been shooting long range since he was 6. Lots of practice paid off when he sent the 162gr hornady amax from my 7rem mag into the ribs of his first elk. My rifle is a savage 116 with a rifle basix trigger a choate stock and a 29" muzzlebroke mcgowen barrel. He shot off a bipod and sand bags. I ranged the elk at 549 yards (I told him he can say 550). Got everything doped and had him take a couple dry fires. He said he was ready and racked the bolt. I reranged and rechecked the wind and he sent it. 1 round sent 1 elk dead. He is a proud young man and I am 1 proud dad. If anyone would like I have video of the hunt I can try to post. Thanks for looking.
