This has come up multiple times here on LRH lately and I thought I'd share my experience on the subject. I've worked quite a bit with specialty pistols using barrels in the 14-20" range in chamberings ranging from 221 Fireball burning 16 grains of powder up through the 338 SnipeTac burning 140gr of powder. Most of the time I get asked about the reduced performance from the short barrel and the increased recoil/blast/flash. The reduced performance really isn't an issue. If a 6.5 Creedmoor shooting a 140gr bullet at 2800+ fps from a 28" barrel is considered good, why wouldn't a 140gr bullet at 2800+ fps from a 20" barreled 6.5 SAUM or PRC be just as good? The performance issue is kind of a non issue. For the flash and recoil though I thought I'd work on taking video of some of my short barreled guns shot at the end of legal hunting hours here in WA to show the flash under big game hunting conditions. For must of the chamberings I don't have short and long barreled guns to do a side by side comparison. I do however have a matched pair for the most extreme example I could come up with using a 338 SnipeTac burning 140gr of powder in both 20" and 30" barrels. Here's an example of the smaller 338/375 Ruger case burning 77gr of powder in an 18" barrel, shot at roughly the same time of day. I'll work on getting more videos of the short barreled guns I have on hand in the next couple of days. If any of you specialty pistol guys want to help out by posting videos of your SPs shot at dusk that'd be great!
