Went hunting with my brother and sister on public land in Iowa today. Had to use a straight wall cartridge, recently got an XPR in 350 legend. Went out at 6:30 AM, and at 6:50 I decided to take a leak before stuff got moving. Pants down, I hear something. I finish peeing and I turn and there’s a huge group of deer about 100 yards from me. I slowly pick up my gun (pants still unbuttoned and unzipped, belt undone) and aim at them, picking my target, a 10 point buck. As you can imagine, I was quite surprised and unprepared for the shot. I missed my first shot completely. But, none of the deer even moved! It was like I wasn’t even there. I took my time with my second shot, they started to run away. They went another 50-75 yards (so about 175-200 yard shot) and stopped to look my way again. I got a good shot and hit the chest of the buck I wanted. He was facing me at a slight angle off of me, went in his front chest and came out his side. He ran maybe 30-40 yards and dropped. he might’ve caught me with my pants down but I still left with him! Waited a while, and started pushing towards my brother and sister, and spooked up a couple more deer, and they each got one as well. Between the 4 of us (my brothers kid was also with us and got one layer) we got 4 bucks in the first 4 hours of Iowa deer season. The most successful hunt we have ever had. We got a spike buck (the one with the head turned back weird in the second pic) a 4 point, a 7 point, and a 10 point.
