I am a 68 Y/O Orthopedic surgeon who is slated for a total hip in 7 days and has had some knee issues in the mountains as well. That said there is clearly a workup that needs to be done if not done already and that would be a MRI which I am sure you know. Outside of minor problems that cause pain the only thing that I would really worry about would be an undiagnosed stress fracture which an X-ray will not show but a MRI will. You describe pain but not instability so probably not a serious ligament injury, but again MRI needed. Now assuming there is not a serious surgically correctable problem then mitigation so you can get through your hunt is in order and the suggestion of viscosupplementation or a steroid shot is appropriate. Regarding your workouts, running while hunting is generally not required (though I have had to on a few occasions), but walking long distances with a heavy pack and climbing generally are. So train for that. The atlas trainer from I believe sold Outdoorsmans is a great tool. While running for me is no longer in the cards I can do miles with this even with my arthritic hip and mildly arthritic knee. Nothing magic about the copper but they seem to be made pretty well. Leg presses, squats and squatting on a strong board will help a lot. For cardiovascular try an elliptical instead of running. Hope this helps and good luck on your hunt. I was slated for an Aoudad hunt in January as well but with this Covid business I cancelled it.
