I recently last week shot a buck in the opening day of South Carolina hunting season with my 300 WSM shooting a 150 grain SMK, just quessing being pushed close to 3200 fps or better, near max load. I shot my buck at about 75yrds quartering away, I hit him right in the flank the bullet traveled through guts, liver and up into his chest cavity, and I found it behind the off shoulder under the skin. The bullet actually stayed together fairly well for being that close and being pushed that fast. My question is how reliable will this bullet be, I did have trouble trailing him because there was no blood trail without the exit, would I have gotten better performance with a more of a broadside shot and maybe an exit? Or should I abandon the SMK and go to a ballistic tip around 165gr or maybe a 168gr barnes, of which I have boxes of. I just stopped with the MK they shot under 1/2 MOA with my rifle. Any help would do, I plan on shooting this rifle a lot more this year and shooting alot more game, I don't want to loose any.
