I am running a proof 18" 308 suppressed for the same reasons you are. While I have bigger and "better" cartridges to choose from for hunting, I just can't seem to leave that rifle at home. I have run a couple different bullets out of it, some for hunting and some for just shooting. For hunting, I have killed several critters with the 168 Berger Classic Hunter. This bullets has taken 5 Barbary sheep, couple of deer and 2 cow elk. The accuracy is great out of this rifle and a 24" 308 I have. I am not sure if it is bullet design or lower velocities, but I get pass through's like you experienced. All animals have been one shot kills and the furthest that bullet has killed anything for me is 2 ewe barbary sheep at 425 yards. I felt like it should be getting more (faster) expansion, so after this years hunts, I used a meplat trimming tool that also opens the hollow point up a bit to see if I can get the bullet to expand a little faster. I bought it years ago from Montour County rifles for an f class rifle but never really used it. If all works out well, I will draw some tags and test them out this fall. My load is 43.5 grains of Varget in lapua brass at 2630 fps. This load holds around half MOA out to 600 yards. My self imposed limit for this combination hunting is 500 yards. I have shot the 152 Hammer hunter bullet but only at paper. I like the way it looks, hear good things about it, but have not shot any animals with them yet. I could get them to 2900 fps out of the 18" barrel but hovered around 3/4 moa. I hear seating depth doesn't really matter, but I think it would be worthy of a seating depth test to see if I could tighten up the group. This bullet shot better groups for me around 2800-2830 fps. I may explore this bullet more in the future.
