If there's no wind, or the wind is consistent and you can read it to within +/- 1-2mph, which plenty of people can do, and you're shooting at say a 2/3 IPSC, with a rifle that shoots a consistent 1/4-1/3 MOA w/ an ES of less than 15-20 then it can happen often enough. It likely won't be dead nuts in the center but if your 1st round is on steel (which tons of people can do) then if you send 2 more in the same conditions at the same POA then you can expect the POI to real close. A softball sized group at 1000 isn't the same as shooting an actual softball at 1000 cold bore. The latter is wayyyy harder. Regardless, thats why you build good rifles and load good ammunition. It's not about guessing. Furthermore the vitals on a deer or elk or whatever aren't the size of a softball. Case in point this is a picture of a group I shot at 1350 a couple weeks ago. Conditions were terrible. Wind was anywhere from 7-15mph, shifting back and forth from R->L and L->R, and the mirage was pretty intense. Group is ~7 inches. Less than a volleyball. But I wouldn't have hit a volleyball. My goal was to hit the center of the plate.
To be clear though, it’s not impossible to shoot a softball size group at 1000, especially with 3 shots. I think people get hung up on shooting an X ring with 5-10 shots at 1000. That’s not what this is about. If there’s no wind, or the wind is consistent and you can read it to within +/- 1-2mph, which plenty of people can do, and you’re shooting at say a 2/3 IPSC, with a rifle that shoots a consistent 1/4-1/3 MOA w/ an ES of less than 15-20 then it can happen often enough. It likely won’t be dead nuts in the center but if your 1st round is on steel (which tons of people can do) then if you send 2 more in the same conditions at the same POA then you can expect the POI to real close. A softball sized group at 1000 isn’t the same as shooting an actual softball at 1000 cold bore. The latter is wayyyy harder. Regardless, thats why you build good rifles and load good ammunition. It’s not about guessing. Furthermore the vitals on a deer or elk or whatever aren’t the size of a softball. But I wouldn’t have hit a volleyball. My goal was to hit the center of the plate.
