Help.. Possible blow by

Hello, I'm new to the muzzle loader community. I just picked up a CVA Paramount HTR. I found a powder charge by weight that the gun really liked. The next time I went to the range using the same charge I could not get it to group like I had before. I'm just wondering if maybe I started getting a leak that is causing inconsistencies. it's not a great picture, but does this carbon buildup indicate a leak?

If your using the veri- flame adapters there prone for leaking . Some will seal and others not so much . The system is a crappie way to do things as the bolt head is spring loaded and it's been long known for issues. Arrowhead has a breach plug and bolt head replacement with brass primer adapters that will not leak and seal tightly. I still need to switch this on my paramount pro but with all the b.s. in several states with new muzzleloader requirements I've not had need yet .

What powder are you using? What was the weather last time you shot and this time? How is the powder stored when you are not using it? Asking because it would be a huge leak to substantially change the grouping of the rifle and I don't see it in your pic. Inconsistent ignition maybe?

I shot the very next day but the temperature was about 20° colder and I stored the powder inside my house with controlled temperature. I shot two days in a row shot really well the first day and the second day it didn't. same powder same bullets same application

I have no experience with the 209 powder. I don't see leakage to substantiate a big change in accuracy though, I'd be looking at ignition and trying to find out if anyone has done much temp stability work with that powder if it were me but that is just my gut feeling.

If the veri- flame adapters are leaking the adapters will be black . You will see a noticeable puff of smoke out the bolt and the inside of the receiver will be black . It was easy to see my receiver is cerakote tan and is now black inside.
