Pure luck - I once had a .17 Rem and placed some kind of golf ball at 300 meters on top of a wad of wet paper. I hit the golf ball and saw is fly straight up, probably 50-60 feet. This was the first round thru that rifle in about 1 year. Before, when stray golf balls were easy to find, I suspended them from fish line by drilling a hole thru the golf ball & threading the line thru the hole and shot at them at 300 yards and more. Now, I buy cheapo hard candy targets with cellophane wrappers, staple them to target boards s at 100, 200 & 300 yards. The candies are about 1.25 in diameter and I get about a 30% hit rate at 300 using a .22-250 with my Weaver T24 having a 1/8 MOA dot reticle. The tiny little dot fits good inside the white peppermint candy with red stripes on edges. The candy is biodegradable and the pieces made the ants happy (sugar high). We used to shoot clays at 500 & 600 yards on Bu LM land but the locals saw the orange fragments and got mad at us - they didn't care that the clays were biodegradable.
