[QUOTE="ofbandg, post: 2195459, member: 91402"] I started out with regular calibers and after a few years moved to magnums, now I do both but tend toward the old standards. 30-06 AI is a good compromise. Mine can get 3200fps with 150 gr. Noslers and Superformance powder out of a 24 inch barrel and that feels like a magnum. A 338-06 will give you 3000fps with 180 gr. Accubonds and that will handle everything up to the big bears without beating on you too much. I still carry my .338 Win Mag and my .375 H&H when I'm in the north country just for the reduced anxiety when stepping over steaming piles of grizzly poo but that's just my worst-case-scenerio outlook showing itself. Magnum is as magnum does, pick a velocity, a bullet weight and the style of rifle you prefer to carry and shoot. Work from there and don't be surprised if you ideas change during the process.
