Years ago I built my brother in law a bolt action 460 S&W on a short action Remington 700 to go with his 460 XVR S&W. He quit hunting and ask If I wanted ether one (He would give the Brother in law Discount on either one), so I said yes to the pistol. a few years later I told him I was thinking about building my self a rifle for the heavy bullets and he said he would make me another deal on the rifle. I could not refuse this deal ether. So I tried it and found the accuracy to be excellent and began hunting hogs armed with both pistol and rifle. I limited my self to 100 yards with the pistol (Not because it wasn't accurate beyond 100 yards but because I also had a rifle with me). the rifle has a 22 inch barrel, and in hind site I had always though it should have a 24 to 26 " but he wanted it short. Several years ago I decided to build a TC Encore with a 4" longer barrel to see how much more the 460 had in it. So I decided on a 26" barrel. What I have found is that a hog cant withstand a 460 in any of the configuration and bullet. They look like they were hit with a Kenworth and if shot placement is good very little meat damage is common as long as tough bullets made for these velocities are used. I have found that the 300 grain XTP' MAG's and the Swift A frame hold up really good and give good velocities and energies I tried the 390 hardcast but they gave up to much velocity, trajectory and energy. It is an amazing round and I would hunt anything in North America with it. J E CUSTOM Using the 22" barrel as a bench mark, it produced 2900 ft/sec with factory 200 grain bullets. the 26" barrel pushed the 200 grain load to 2900 ft/sec. The 22 " barrel could almost make 2350 with the 300 grain XTP Mag and the 26'' barrel averaged 2505 for a whopping 4181 ft/lbs muzzle energy. It appears that 4 inches of barrel only added 150 ft/sec so I glad I stopped at 26.
