In my hunt for cheap guns to fix up and or build i ended up with an enfield no.1 mk3. It was a freebie, can't go wrong there. But this thing is fugly, I don't have a clue who fitted whatever kind of monte carlo stock on it, and cut the forearm down a few inches along with the barrel But this rifle was a hard used hunter and killed quite a few deer from what I've been told. I know these actions are on the weak side for anything extreme. I got to thinking about what i could do with this thing and i want to do something different. Can rimless cartridges be used with this particular action? If so, is a 22-250 too much for this action? If not, would necking down the .303 or the .303-25 to a .22 with an ackley improvement, (or maybe i could talk to mr allen about doing this with his improvement) done be comparable to the 22-250? If i want to use the factory mag i know it will be a pain to fit but could other cartridges be used my last 22-250 had an o.a.l. of like 2.52something like that. I doubt i would shoot anything bigger than a 55 gr. bullet. probably go with a little heavier than varmint barrel about 26 inches long since this thing was used to like a 28 or 30 inch barrel originally. Im still looking for a decent looking stock to put on and with what I'm thinking about doing buying some original wood doesn't seem to fit the rest of it. I am open to suggestions, I'm just in the thinking stage of this one, anything is appreciated.
