If those numbers are correct, then tell me how did the Canadians double the elk herd in the East Kootenai region from 15000 to near 30000 head from 1997-2010, if wolves kill 90% of the elk herd? Do you guys realize how many elk that is? In an area not much bigger than R1 in MT? In our best years, we couldn't get 5000 elk(not countig the Bob Marshal Complex EMU where most of those head to the east side for the winter.) You can bet at the wolf meeting, the room will be full. Contrary to Bridges belief or understanding, there is a lot of support from the bios to remove the quotas. They also want trapping to get started as well. Why wasn't there more people there clamoring for the abandonment of the youth hunt, or should I say the "youth" hunt. We all know who is shooting those cows. The Canadians, when they were down to some 15000 elk, halted all shooting of cows and went to the six-point bull season. It was quietly stated at the meeting that 450 cows were killed by youth hunters in R1 this year. Look at the elk populations that are probably less now than in 2004 in the EMP and see what % of the total 450 elk is. Still think wolves are our only problem? </p><p> </p><p>We could have the same hunting here in R1(I can't speak for the rest of the state, I only hunt here) as the Canadians have, but you will never get public support for having rules and regs the Canadians have. The EMP shows the people around Eureka were the most opposed to the browtine bull reg! Look what they could have up there if if they managed 100, 101, 109 like region 4 in BC. They shoot the crap our of every raghorn bull that migrates out of Canada. Its an outright slaughter of elk north of Eureka, yet they complain wolves killed everything.</p><p> </p><p>We need trapping to get rolling, we need incentive to shoot more bears here(they are pounding calves and fawns in that first month of life), we need lion quotas doubled, we need to end this stupid "youth hunt" and stop killing all our baby makers, and we need to pray for giant fires to "log" off some timber for more forage, since logging is pretty much gone now. And we also need to change our mindset, get out of the management rut we are in and look at who is successful at managing game, and why.</p><p> </p><p>Like I have stated before, better turn your animosity and conspiracies away from FWP and look at groups like Footloose MT, because they are mobilizing right in front of your face to end all trapping on public land in MT. They narrowly missed the ballot last time, they won't miss it next time. If that measure makes the ballot, it probably will pass, and along with it, trappers will be gone along with any and all chances of reducing wolf numbers.</p></blockquote><p></p>
