Great trip! That's a great black bear. The fish and shrimp must have been awesome. I know fresh halibut is my absolute favorite. Me and my nephew made a similar trip a few years ago. We hired a "transporter" boat, a 50 footer, and we left out of Whittier also. It was two weeks later than your trip. It was raining when we loaded our gear on the boat and it was raining when we got off the boat. It never stopped raining, unless it did at night. Four of us hunters on the boat with a captain and first mate. The accommodations were adequate and we caught a few small halibut and rock fish off the boat. Luckily the back of the boat was covered. The first afternoon when leaving Whittier I spotted a black object on shore and it was a big black bear. I headed below to get my gear but before I even made it back up I was advised to not hurry, it was a sow with cubs. Only bear "we" saw the whole 5 days. We cruised around some inlets and shorelines. We did go ashore every day and got soaked, either from the rain or from sweating trying to cover some ground. So later in the trip as we were making our way back to Whittier, I asked the captain, who had a birds eye view, if we had missed any bears. He didn't want to say, but admitted we missed 5 or 6. Heck, we didn't stand out in the rain and couldn't see very good out the windows. I know as a transporter, not an outfitter, that they can't assist with the hunting. To say the least, I wasn't happy about that part. So I called this trip, the bear boat ride, with friends. The two other guys on the ride were a father/son and we became good friends and I have hunted many times in Alaska since with them. So glad your trip was better and your scenery looks so much better with sunshine!!!
