I am going to assume we are hunting moose or elk or large bears, so we need as a rule of thumb 1500lbs of energy. That said any of the following will do the job more than sufficiently 308, 30/06, 30/06 Improved, 300 WM, 338 WM. Hard to move away from the tried and true for the purposes you stated and any of these, under normal circumstances, will have factory ammo readily available just about anywhere in the world should you find yourself in need. I like my Gucci cartridges but the ones I take with me on trips to Alaska or Africa are the tried and true 308, 270 win, 7x57, 300WM, and 375 H&H. Though not as easy to find ammo for another good consideration if your just set on something else or a short action would be the 300 WSM. JMO
You have gotten a lot of good advice. Two things come to mind in your cartridge discussion. One you mentioned 30 caliber and two a 20 inch barrel. That to me raises a hand full of Cartridges to the top and eliminates several as well. If you are going to go with a 20” barrel there is no need to consider any of the super magnums because you want have enough barrel to burn up all that excess powder and thus gain no real advantage. Just because you can take the recoil does not mean you should, if it gains no real advantage. You stated you wanted a heavy hitter out to 650 yards. JMO
