I have always been a fan of the 69 gr SMK but lately I have been playing with the 60 gr Ballistic Tip. This bullet has a crimping groove specifically for use in the AR rifles. In my very short barreled Ruger SR I wanted to see what it could do as this rifle only has a 1-9 twist. Loading data says you can get 3150 fps with this bullet in a 24" barrel length with Benchmark, since my rifle is just over 16" in length I was hoping to get close to 3000 fps and I would be happy, thats right where she ended up with a very comfortable load as far as pressures. BC on this bullet is supposed to be .270 but from my drop testing, it seems to be a bit higher then this as I had to use .290 to get my drop chart to match up. First outing with the new load which does easily fit in the magazines turned in several 1/3 to 1/2 moa three shot groups at 100 yards which to be honest suprised the hell out of me!!! I then tested the drop numbers with a mil dot reticle and after some tweaking of the drop chart, she was hitting on the money out to 700 yards in calm conditions. I was also able to connect 3 for 3 on gophers at 224, 485 and 515 yards, again, a great suprise to me. I was also impressed with the bullets performance terminally. At 224 yards, the gopher was dramatically dispatched with obvious bullet expansion. At the two longer ranges, it was not like the expansion at the closer range but there was alot more expansion then what you would ever get with any SMK or any other match hollow point at that range. Not the standard hit and flop like most match bullets, actual significant damage was done. Again, certainly not the highest BC bullet but the way I see it, the 223 is a 700 yard MAX chambering and more realistic 500-600 is more practical except in IDEAL conditions. For this range, the 60 gr Ballistic tip does very well and offers pretty decent expansion at the longer ranges. In a longer barrel length of 24" and loaded to 3150 fps, it would be far superior to what I am seeing with my lower velocities in the short Ruger barrel length.
