There are a lot guys here with a heck of a lot more experience at 1000yd shooting, but I do have a pretty good idea what works. For paper, p-doggin, and 800yrd deer, the 260 is probably a better option. It is capable of pushing a 140grn bullet fast enough to be very effective for everything mentioned. You want to speed it up drop to the 123grn bullet. The BC is much better with the lighter bullets compared to the 308Win. However, I enjoy the .308. I have 2 that are a pleasure to shoot. With good hand loads they work very well. Using a 155 Palma bullet or 175 and heavier will still do well competing against the 260. Depends on the man behind the trigger. I know a few guys that will wipe a competition with a standard .308 against guys with normal bench gun calibers (6BR, 6.5x284, 6XC). I know some here will disagree, but it can compete. It has for years. One thing about the 260, is that recoil will be a little less compared to a .308 depending on what weight bullet you use. As for the thumb hole stocks? I like them, but prefer the standard drop grip style stock. I currently own a Bell&Carlson Medalist A2. I converted my repeater to a single shot. It is sporting an aftermarket barrel now that I fried 2 Savage barrels when I upgraded them to 300WSM. Needless to say I got a little too ambitious in my loading. :D Hope this helps. Tank
