My goal was a woods gun that was effective to 400 yards with the intent to shoot most of the time under 300 hundred. I have a 16.5" Ruger compact laminate in 308 win, so I'm constrained by bullet velocity. Barnes ttsx bullets each have different min opening speeds. When I talked with Barnes this is the current data I was told for 308 cal bullet min opening velocities. Note Barnes 150gr ttsx boxed ammo opens up at 1500 min but they don't sell that bullet for hand loading. 110 TSX 1900 110 TTSX 2000 130 TTSX 1800 150 TSX 1800 150 TTSX 2000 168 TTSX 1500 I ran the chrono barrel speeds that I'm getting with my 16.5" ruger through a ballistic calculator and even with faster speeds of the 130gr ttsx the 168 for me is a better fit. the 130 gr gets me out to 380 yards before I drop below the min speed of 1800 fps. the 150gr is 270 yards where I hit 2000 fps. the 168 gr is 640 yards where it hits 1500 FPS. Thank goodness for ballistic calculators I never would have thought that a heavier bullet Mono would have been a better fit at 400 yards than a 130 gr Hope this is useful to others. Cheers.
