I'll keep trying the 168s for a while because I really like the high BCs of the Bergers. I also have some of the Sierra 175gr SMKs and SGKs that should be here today. I'm just afraid that about the time I find a load that will shoot my barrel will be burned out and my shoulder will be hamburger.
Good luck reloading for your 7mm RUM. I'm not having much luck with a new Sendero I bought a couple of weeks ago. I think my main problem is the freebore in the Remington factory barrel. Remington specs on the chamber for the 7mm Rem. Ultra Mags calls for .400" of freebore to protect the gun from over pressure. This prevents even a remote possibility of seeting any bullet to the lands. I'm trying to load the Berger 180gr. VLD and with the bullet seated as far out as possible it's still .25" from the rifling. I've loaded Retumbo (92 grains) , H1000 (88 grains), H870 (94 grains) and H4831SC (81 grains) trying to find a load that will shoot. I've seated them with a COAL from 3.600" to 3.920 (that one got me a collapsed case and you have to remove the bolt to remove a loaded shell from the gun) No joy yet. About the best I've been able to consistently get out of this bullet and caliber is about 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards. This weekend I loaded some test loads of the Berger 168gr VLD and the first groups I shot with the four different powders didn't show much either. Three shot groups were running about an inch. I'm just afraid that about the time I find a load that will shoot my barrel will be burned out and my shoulder will be hamburger. If you find a load that will shoot, please share it.
