I did not mean to insult you. I wish I was in your shape. But at 63 I think that is dreaming. In this business people get caught up in fads and monkey see and monkey do. My point was a half inch of steel would not add much weight. These days there are bullets as long as your big toe. A long action would never limit you on cartridge length. As I write this I am waiting on a reamer and barrel to build a F class gun for a customer in 7 prc. With a 183 sierra seated with the shank at the neck shoulder junction it measures 3.065. If you put a wyatts box on a short action remington you get right at 3 inches. If you use a bullet not so long it would work fine . And I want to add to get the performance I would use a 23 to 25 inch barrel. Takes length to burn powder. I wish you the best in your decision and if you would like to pm me I would be happy to discuss all. When I hunt the beltrami I use a 7x57 I barreled in a model 70 super grade with a 23 inch barrel. Sweet little gun that kills whatever I point it at. Wall tent and wood smoke. Hard to beat.
