I have a couple of 308's I hunt with. First one is a 18" barrel I run suppressed at 2830 FPS with a 155 berger hvld. This gun has killed a number of elk, deer, barbary sheep and antelope. Easily comfortable to 500 yards hunting with it, although for elk it is starting to get a little low on energy at that distance, in my opinion. Have shot a cow elk at 530 with it and it worked, but conditions need to be pretty good for me. Getting great results out of the 155 at close and further distances. I also run a 24" 308 with the 168 berger classic hunter at 2780 fps. I have to say that bullet at that starting velocity is absolutely wicked on game animals. Have shot over a dozen deer, a couple elk and a barbary sheep with it and terminal performance has been outstanding. This is my go to hunting rifle for most everything I hunt. I do own a 6.5 creedmore and have used it to harvest an antelope, but I personally prefer my 308 for hunting. I have used them more and have more confidence in it than my creed. As others have stated, I have larger rifles for other circumstances, but I am really fond of my 308's.
