This is a long time debate and there is no one correct answer but I will give you my reasoning for choosing a 300 RUM. First I have had several 300Win Mags and loved them and used them for long range match shooting. When the 300RUM came out I found out that they were just as accurate, and could be used at the same velocities with the same bullets and have longer brass life than the 300WM.(More slow burning powder with less pressure and felt recoil) "OR" loaded up and extending the effective range by 2 or 300 yrds. So my logic was why own 2 rifles when you could have one do the work of two. You can load a 300RUM down to 300WM energy and velocitys but you can't load a 300 WM up to perform like a 300 RUM. Barrel life depends on how hot your loads are .Obviously a 300 RUM loaded 300ft/sec faster than a 300WM will erode the barrel faster . The downside to speed is throat erosion, the upside is trajectory. If you take a 30/378 up to its potential it will erode faster than a 300 RUM. So if I want to hunt deer size game I can load down with light bullets and still get good performance or load heavy bullets hot for elk size game, If you have a 300WM you don't have to sell it and buy a 300RUM, But if you are going to buy a new rifle in 30 cal ,of the two I would recomend the RUM. Just my 2 cents J E CUSTOM
