Wife drew a high preference point muzzle loader bull elk tag here in Colorado. We got a brand new .50 cal CVA Accura MR-x muzzle, 26” barrel, and I’m a rookie with these smoke poles… we’ve both shot the rifle and love it. Fun gun! Started with a scope to make sure it shoots good. 84 grains BH209, measured on a scale, with the 300 gr Thor Lightning, CCI 209’s, very consistent at 1850 fps. Shoot about 2.5 inches at 100 yards scoped… seems plenty accurate for elk. Of course I have now mounted the peep sights since scopes are illegal. BH209 load data says a 300 Thor should push a little faster, north of 2k fps. Probably a longer test barrel but they don’t specify. What would you experts do with this rifle? Call it good? Keep tweaking to get up closer to 2000 fps? I’ve read a bunch of threads here, and seems like there’s lots of variations. Is 1850 with a 300 Thor plenty out to 100 yards maybe 150 yards?
