I’m probably one of the biggest 30-06 fans out there, but even I come to realize it’s limits. I went to 308 mainly because of barrel life when shooting at the range. The 308 does just about everything a 30-06 can do, but most people who are in the know claim 5-6k rounds in a 30-06 factory barrel, and most say you’ll never shoot out your 308. Looking down the bore of my 06 I can see its frosty at the throat and it’s about 5k. I’ve lobbed 208 grain elds to 2800 FPS for a long time now. It’s hit torso targets at 1500 yards, probably still would. It’s been a great rifle to learn on. After years of shooting different cartridges, I’ve settled on a few that overlaps in components so I can keep feeding them in these expensive times 30-06 is definitely in the stable. When kept in its limits, no one will ever question why you brought a 30-06. After saying all that, i believe the 30-06 case is better suited for the 7mm bullet.
