I have recently built a 25-06AI on a howa 1500 action using a preferred barrels prefit. I have had amazing results with the rifle so far and am now getting groups near 1/2MOA after doing load development. However, I am starting to question if I got the headspace set correctly and here is why... I used PTG go/no-go gauges for "25-06 Remington Ackley Improved 40 Degree Shoulder" to set the headspace on this 25-06AI rifle. This resulted in a headspace of 2.099" on fire-forming and 2.100" on subsequent firings using lapua 30-06 brass and a whidden 0.375" datum. When I run this fired brass through my full length Redding S die for "25-06 Remington Imp 40degree" the die cams over before it ever touches the shoulder. I have a few remington brass cases that I used to do the intial break in on this barrel and those cases measure 2.102". After running those through my sizing die the shoulder is never bumped. When I try to chamber one of these resized cases it is jammed pretty tight into the chamber and bolt closure is pretty stiff. My lapua case are slowly growing in length and I am sure before long they will also be stiff on bolt closure. My first thought was to simply take some material off the bottom of the sizing die so that I could make sure I am bumping my should back 0.002", but now I am wondering if my headspace is indeed set correctly. I have some plain jane 25-06 cartridges that I have test chambered in my rifle and they do chamber, but with slight stiffness. Not as stiff as my 2.102" brass, but noticeably stuff. I'm not positive exactly how stiff this should be to be honest and further has me worried that maybe I don't have my headspace set correctly even though I used a set of PTG go/no-go gauges. For those that are shooting a 25-06AI, what dimension is your headspace set at and what method did you use to set your headspace?
