By luck I took my wife out one day to shoot and was letting her do most of the shooting but I had taken my 300RUM with my hunting loads out also. Cold bore at 1042 yards I put the first shoot on a 6" steal plate. My wife reaction was, WOW!! I cant believe you did that. You can keep practicing. I think that was probably one of the luckiest shots I made to date. It was a spot that I practice at a lot and shoot rocks on the side of the hill so yes a lot of luck for a factory gun but I still was used to doing the shot but usually not quite that good. Most time the first 3 shot dance around 10 to 12 inches at this distance if I shoot for a 3 to 5 shot group. Wind seem to always be the killer. That day we had zero wind and it was supper still. Good shooting morning with temps in the upper 40's. If I wasn't the process of moving I would be up for the shoot.
Another fun one would be but take some time. Go out an shoot 5 cold bore shots all on different days and see how well your rifle, you, and your ammo can make a small group. It gives you a decent indication of what that opening morning of hunting season will be like. I was shooting prone and jumped up with a big smile picked up my gun and put it back in the case. And with a pompous big grin, I looked over at her and said I'm good for the day.
