New Deer Rifle 2026

If you reload take a look at the .270 Ackley Improved. A Nosler 150gr ( BC of .625 ) @ 3100-3300fps. We are getting 1 inch groups @ 300 yards with this combination. I would like to build another rifle in a different cartridge, but cannot rationalize building one. I have a really nice 30-06 that has become a safe queen since I've built the .270 AI. Compare (objectively) the ballistics with any of the recommended cartridges, you will find that the .270 AI exceeds or is on par with all of them. .270 Winchester brass is totally easy to find and it doesn't take a can of powder to run this cartridge either.

I am a bit of a 257 Roberts nut. I have 3 working rifles in the safe and two in the process of being rebuilt. The 257 R in Springfield 03 rifle is getting a new fast twist barrel that will be a 257 AI. I have a gorgeous wood stock for it that I got off of eBay. This was going to be for my nephew until he turned his nose up at it. Not fast enough
for him. He's not into classics. My brother said something about 2nd hand stuff. No problem , he now owns a Savage Axis in a 243 that my brother bought him.
The 257 AI now goes to a grandson who helps me reload. The same grandson who helps split fire wood and mows the back pasture. We are waiting to see what scope will be a good fit.

Ive been looking at the 6.5 Grendal and now the 22 Creedmoore. Both look amazing.

Based on this: I like the 6 Creed but I would start with the 25 and move through everything to the 7mm-08.

My "most often used" list for whitetails is:
7SS with 160 AccuBond
270 w/124 Hammer Hunter
6.5-284 w/130 AccuBond
I am a trophy hunter, haven't killed a deer in a few years. But when I do shoot, I don't want to have to look far to find him. So I tend to always "take enough rifle" and bullet with superior terminal performance.

My buddy had a 6.5PRC built by a guy in southern Oregon a couple years ago, I've never been a 6.5 fan til I watched him smack a couple blacktails in the back country and it whacks em pretty **** good with not much recoil

Used a friends 7mm prc last year. Like it enough I got my own this year. Have yet to do ammo testing but I used the eldx's factory ammo and was impressed with the terminal performance. Hopefully my ruger gen 2 I just got likes them
