Savage model 99a 375 inherited

Hello everyone my grandfather recently passed amd I was willed this gun. What should I do? The ammo is pretty rare amd the brass are as well. Should I trade, sell, or just store the gun. I have not gone to pick it up
I think maybe you can form brass from .30-30 brass, though it comes out just a tad shorter than spec, or from .38-55. Search the internet, there are some videos out there. Redding makes some oddball forming dies, might have something of use to you. I think you have a rare and magical rifle there, still among the best for the deep woods, especiall if black bear is on your menu. Overall, the Savage 99 was the best lever action ever made: you can mount a scope or other optical sight and you can use spitzer bullets, because the catridgesa aren't stacked end to end in the magazine. My great Uncle wore out a .303 before WWI subsistence hunting, then bought a .300. Only rifle he ever used.

Grimreality,
If you can get your post count up so you can PM me and it means you won't sell your grandpa's Savage 99 I may be able to help you find some .375 Winchester brass.
As has been stated Savage 99s in .375 Winchester are rare. Out of all the ones they made only one belonged to your grandfather so it is a one of a kind you can never replace. If he wanted it sold he could have done that but he kept it for you.

The gun doesnt have any sentimental value my grandpaw left me this gun since I'm the only other grandson. To my knowledge he hunted with it once then put it in his deep storage cabinet. I have his 3030 I bought from him on my 21st bday. My only hesitation is the reloading I'm only 33 and I work 50 to 60 hours a week so this would be a pretty hard gun for me to hunt with. It is a beautiful gun without a doubt it has to run like a dream. But I don't want a gun to be ruined by just sitting in a safe and not being shoot or used for years

If you are intent on selling it, have it appraised by a certified firearms appraiser specializing in 99's so you know the real value instead of from meatheads on an Internet forum. You will get a lot of offers but so what? Find out what it is really worth and go from there.

Heck, I bet someone will offer trade 700ADL 30-06 even up!🤮 Maybe even with World Class Tasco scope on it.🤮

Good luck!

You may regret that choice in a decade or two. Nothing wrong with a rare safe queen. Especially when they eat nothing & do not depreciate. But go up in value. But you do you.

I was born and raised in La., just north of BR. While I didn't have a safe to store my firearms in…….I never had a rusting issue. And, I did a lot of hunting in the rain.

If you follow some of the advice given by others, you shouldn't have any problems with rust! JMO. memtb

I just don't have the time for the next few years I'm in a trade that is sadly aging out. My local has 1100 members and were expected in 8 years to lose close to 400 guys from retirement. How long does reloading take and space what type of requirements and research does it take? I don't believe I have said it yet but thank all of you for helping me with this situation. I just don't want to make a rash decision or one I will regret down the road

I might be able to come up with a Remington 700 ADL. But do they still make Tasco scopes? 🤑🤑

I was born and raised in a small town between New orleans and baton rouge I usually hunt the marshs and swamps. Now I live towards the tip of the boot so it's alot of hills and fields. This the reason why I was looking for a longer range than my ole 3030
I have quite a few 99s. I also have quite a bit of historical information available about them from a few books I have. PM me if you want to send me the serial# and some pics so I can give you some solid information on the rifle.

It takes vert little room, and even less time…..if you're only loading for some occasional shooting and a little hunting!

I was living in a small apartment once….built a little, very solid bench that was about 3 feet long and 18"deep.

It was a place to mount the press, the case trimmer, and stack a few components that I was using…..with some bench left over. Heck, you can prime your cases with a hand primer and charge your cases on the kitchen table using a powder balance and funnel….then go back to your press for the seating step. memtb

Addendum: Living in the area in which you live, you are likely to far bigger problems than rust…….jus say'n! 😉

Take your and think it over carefully. I have my Grandpa's WWI mess kit and a few other souvenirs he brought back from Europe after the war. I also have his High Standard .22 revolver. If someone tried to take them from me with a grenade in his hand I would fight him with a stick.
