Easy peasy. If you don't like how the bullet performed, use a different one!

My Rem 700CDL 270 WSM with (140 AB) kicks a little less than my Win M70 30-06. Have you considered the old standard 270? Plenty for elk. Less recoil. If you reload or go with performance ammo you can get withing 100-150- fps of a WSM and easier to shoot.

Going back to my first rifle as well. Winchester Westerner 30-06 purchased in ~1978. Hunted elk, deer, bear, dogs with it for many years. Lot's of different loads worked up. Last 20 years it's sat in back of the gun closet collecting dust. Been using a 270 WSM, 22-250 and 300 win for years...

Danner Raptor when it's cold - I think they have 1,000 grams thinsulate, waterproof, feel like slippers on my feet - my all time favorite boot for hunting. Sorel Maverick when it's real cold - very warm, air bob sole for great traction, tall boot keeps snow out.
