    Bear protection handguns?

Anybody thinks Phil is recommending 9mm with any bullet, to stop a completely determined brown or grizzly bear charge, misinterpreted his interview statements. I recall him stating it would be suicidal to go into the brush after any wounded bear with the 9mm. He killed a less than determined...

    Bear protection handguns?

I expect a minimum of 36" penetration with my bear defense revolver slugs. Preferably 48" + 12" is for small game and upland birds - better than a baseball bat. Which isn't saying much... Makes little sense going into a fight with 4-foot plus long bear, carrying a 2-3 foot handicap. So many...

338 Rum and Alaska Brown Bear !

That's a dandy bear! Nice mature boar, good fur, and ivory color front claws. Ivory claws often indicates an older bear. Good shot placement 👍 Any time the sun is shining on that part of the Island, it's a great day to be hunting spring bear. Congratulations!

Interesting article on bear spray vs. bear handgun defense

As I recall from watching the video, the bear never charged Phil. It ran up to his two clients at least twice, who had both dropped to the ground and huddled together. Bear stood next to the couple huddled on the ground, but never made physical contact. This gave Phil time to place three slugs...

Interesting article on bear spray vs. bear handgun defense

I watched that video. Phil's not the average man, and his experiences and recommendations aren't a best fit for the average man, IMO. There are bears that don't fit his mold of experiences. And I've met some of them. I understand where he's coming from, based on his long experience as an...

Interesting article on bear spray vs. bear handgun defense

Understand and agree with the value of a good dog while traipsing around in bear country. Have a friend lives remotely on Kodiak Island for 40+ years that always keeps a dog by his side. Dogs can sense bear presence before people, and provide early notification of presence of bear. But... the...

Interesting article on bear spray vs. bear handgun defense

Not to bicker... But... I once fired a high powered rifle bullet within 12" of a threatening grizzly bear's ear from ~30yds distance in an effort to scare it away. He never even blinked. Just continued looking at me like I owed him money. It was as if I'd not fired the shot. Bears come in all...

Interesting article on bear spray vs. bear handgun defense

1st choice... Rather never get mauled or kilt by a bear. 2nd choice... If I get mauled or kilt by a bear, much prefer going through that experience with a big bore revolver in my hands, than an emptied / dispensed can of pepper spray.

Interesting article on bear spray vs. bear handgun defense

A fit man on his early 40s was killed by a sow brown bear about 30 miles from my residence ~ 2 years ago. Near Hope, Alaska. Similar outcome... Responding officials found a completely dispersed can of bear spray next to his mutilated carcass. Only bear incapable of maiming and/or killing is a...

Cans of bear spray good for target practice. They might fend off a pussycat bear. Apt to **** off a determined one.

    Alaska Grizzly Bullet Choice

You may maintain and care for your semi-auto pistols better than the average hunter. You may know more about matching ammo to a specific pistol. Sounds like you certainly know more about the importance of vetting ammo to a pistol, compared to the average user. Firearms in the field are exposed...
