Froze deboned Elk immediately after kill

Moosehunter, That's encouraging. I hope after thawing and aging some in the refrigerator it will do the trick! I will report back on that. My hunting buddy cooked some backstrap this AM also and was very surprised it was so tough. We then talked about this and he sliced some of the...

Froze deboned Elk immediately after kill

We shot two cow elk (smaller yearlings) at daybreak a couple of days ago. Were in a hurry to get on the road to home so we quickly gutted and skinned the animals, deboned the meat and had in ice chests by 10AM. We used a process my hunting buddy suggested using layers of ice, salt and zip...

Need to rent a barn for a day or two in Jan to process Elk near Evanston, Wyo

My friend and I each have cow elk tags for a special January hunt and need a place to debone our kill. We used to have a barn we could hang and debone the animals but unfortunately the gentleman that allowed us to use it has moved away. We are responsible, would clean up our mess and will be...

Best Pre-fit Savage barrel? Better than Shilen Super select?

There are some hit or miss pre-fit barrel manufacturers out there but in my experience if you get one from a top flight company your chances of getting a good barrel are just as good as going with a barrel chambered by a gunsmith. I say that coming from direct experience with dozens of...

Help me select a bullet for open country Elk

The hunt is in 2020. I am not concerned about the distance, in fact I am very comfortable with 600 yard or beyond shots if wind is not bad and I know the distance. I shoot F class, long range varmint steel and LOTS of 300 to 400 yard ground squirrels. I won't take a LR shot unless my rifle is...

Help me select a bullet for open country Elk

The 214 grain Hammer needs at least 8.75 twist at altitude so Hammers are out.

Help me select a bullet for open country Elk

The Berger twist rate calculator says long bullets like the 212 Hornady ELDX will not be stabilized in my 30-06 10.25 twist rate barrel so I will go with a bullet in the 180 gr range. The Win Mag will be throwing 210 to 220 grainers. I'm skeptical about the ELDX line when it comes to...

Thanks for the suggestion. Is that bullet sold as one that holds together well?

Help me select a bullet for open country Elk

We will be hunting open plains Elk in East Wyoming. I have not hunted there but my buddy who has been there several times says the shots are always 450 yards and beyond. I will be taking my 300 WinMag as well as a 30.06 for backup. I have not reloaded for these cartridges in the past and for...

Your favorite 6.5 bullet using 8 twist for varmints

Primarily Rock Chucks but some coyote too. Looking for accuracy first. High BC and explosive effect very important too. Hornady 95 Vmax? Other choices? Thanks for your inputs!

    Is a 4.5-14 scope enough?

A Weaver T36 would be a mistake, the field of view is too small. Go variable so you can scan for targets at lower powers then zoom in to interrogate and shoot.
