If I wasn’t planning on using a pack every year and I was just getting a budget pack for one hunt, I would go with an Alps pack. If I planned on keeping it and using frequently, I would go with Mystery Ranch
I used to be solely in the camp that you needed to carry a GPS. But after many years, I have no switched and won’t look back to using my phone as the GPS. I use Gaia GPS. I also carry a 5000 Mah battery with me because your phone will go through power much faster than the GPS
It’s unfortunate, but I don’t know how I survived without an inreach before. Unfortunately, I keep in constant contact with work, family, etc. throughout my hunt with my Inreach Explorer
I found when it comes to boots it’s really a personal preference. You kind of need to put them on and walk around. I know some people rave about Crispi, my feet don’t like them. I’ve been very happy with Zamberlain and Lowa, although the Lowa’s are heavier in my opinion.
I love the Mountainhouse meals. You can get them on sale for a pretty good price at Kroger’s or Sierra sometime. I’ve also started dehydrating some of my own meals.
I’ve got two mystery ranch packs. A Metcalf and a Marshall. The Metcalf has hauled out many an elk and has taken an absolute beating and you wouldn’t know it by looking at it. I give it an ice water bath after any meat caring and it still looks almost new. Has probably went easily 600 - 700...
I spend my winters, stair, climbing and cycling, I’ve got bad knees, and so I have to be a little bit careful about treadmill walking, but that keeps me in shape throughout the year
Before I lived near any mountains, I would spend an hour each day on the stair climber at the gym, and as it’s getting closer to the season, I would try to do two hours in the morning, two hours in the evening
I like to focus on one thing at the range each time. Trigger control, vertical aim, horizontal aim. Maybe someday I’ll be good enough to work on all of the things but right now I just try to focus on one.
